There are many advantages of using household wastewater for irrigation. Household recycled water if used for maintenance of gardens can greatly contribute in conserving a lot of water.
There is a difference between grey water and black water. Grey water is known as wash water, it comprises of all waste water excluding toilet and food wastes. Nitrogen is a major component of black water. Nitrogen is one of the most unwanted water pollutants. Ninety percent of the black water composition consists of Nitrogen. As compared to black water, the grey water decomposes at a faster rate and is therefore environmental friendly. Grey water is the waste water collected from laundry, shower, sink etc. Around 80% of the household waste water is grey water that can be used for irrigation.
There are many mechanical and biological systems being used to recycle grey water. These treatments include sand filtration, lava filter system, treatment ponds, living walls, activated sludge system etc but till now there has been no method by which water can be recovered for household purposes. In order to retrieve good quality of water from recycled water, 2-3 water purification methods can be used in combination with each other. Besides irrigation, grey water can also be used for flushing toilets.
