Rooftop Rainwater CollectionRooftop Rainwater Collection
Rooftop rainwater collection is being used very commonly throughout Australia for rainwater harvesting. Australia is the driest continent on the Earth and people living in Australia have to deal with severe water shortage especially during the dry season. During the dry spell the main water is not sufficient for watering gardens and plants, and using mains water for tasks like flushing toilets , washing clothes, car cleaning etc can be a very costly affair. To overcome this problem the concept of installation of rainwater storage system has been promoted at a very large scale.
In Australia where the ground water level is inadequate to meet the requirement of the people, rooftop rainwater collection can be the best way of resolving the problem. Rooftop rainwater is also used to effectively utilize rainwater runoff and thus there is flood reduction. The concept is simple, environmental friendly and economical. In Rooftop rainwater collection system, rooftop is used as the catchment area for collecting rainwater. The water is transported through the gutter and piping system to the rainwater storage tank. Rooftop should be made of good quality material. If the rooftop is painted ensure that the paint that is used will not pass any toxic elements to the rainwater. Similarly metallic rooftop should not be used for rainwater collection if it is not rust and corrosion proof. At the time of first rainfall the rooftop is generally not clean and has lot of dust, debris, dead insects, leaves etc which can contaminate the water. Therefore first flush diverters are used to remove first few litres of rainfall as that contains maximum amount of contaminants.
Rainwater collection systems must incorporate good quality rainwater collection tanks so that the water that remains stored for long duration does not get contaminated. If the rainwater tank is made of plastic ensure that it has smooth walls, is one piece construction, has opaque exteriors, is UV stabilized and is of food grade quality. Concrete rainwater tanks should be installed with extra support so that the tank does not break. Metallic rainwater tanks should be rust and corrosion proof. Check the guarantee period that is offered by the manufacturer.
