Water Tanks Installation

Rainwater Tank Installation: Are there any requirements?

First of all, rainwater tank installation is best done by an expert or experienced plumber. Each council may have its own set of requirements for rainwater tank installation. In Sydney, installation approval is required if the rainwater tank is intended to be connected to Sydney Water’s water supply. This type of connection is primarily done to provide a back up water supply in homes or industries. So in cases wherein rainwater tank installation is just for the mere purpose of watering gardens or any other use which does not require connection to the mains water supply, no installation approval is needed. It is still advisable though that the council water supply is informed of a rainwater tank installation in order to have a free meter installed. This free meter has a built in backflow prevention device. However, only those who fall under the eligibility criteria may avail of this free service.

If internal connection is needed, a licensed plumber is required to do the rainwater tank installation. Connection of the rainwater tank to the home’s internal plumbing may supply water for flushing toilets or for washing machines. In this case, rainwater tank installation must be approved by the local council water supply system since internal connection would certainly need a back up supply in times of low rainfall levels.

Rainwater Tank Installation: Why is there a need to have it installed by a licensed plumber?

A licensed plumber is needed in these cases of rainwater tank installation to ensure that the contents of the tank do not leak out or mix into the public water supply. A licensed plumber is also aware of the various requirements needed for the connection. Examples of these requirements include having a visible air gap between the water supply and rainwater tank and a backflow prevention device fitted at the meter.

Rainwater tank installation for tanks with a total water volume capacity of 10,000 litres or less generally do not require council approval. However, some models may still be subject to council requirements. Please always keep in mind that each council has different rainwater tank installation requirements. You should always check with your local water supply system before purchasing and installing any rainwater tank.
