Rainwater collection systems have greatly contributed in conservation of water. In Australia, severe water restriction during the dry weather had become a serious issue. The concept of installation of rainwater collection systems has resolved the water supply problem to a great extent. Now tons of water is saved everyday as the people are now reducing their dependency on the mains water supply. Rainwater collection systems have proved to be a boon for the people living in Australia. More than 70% percent of the mains water is substituted by the rainwater collected by the rainwater collection system.
Besides residential areas, rainwater collection systems are also being implemented in the industrial and commercial establishments and are also being used extensively in irrigation and agricultural practices. Rainwater collection systems implement a simple logic of collecting rainwater falling on a rainwater catchment surface such as a rooftop and transporting it to a rainwater storage tank. This tank is connected to the plumbing system and when the water level in the tank falls below the defined minimum level either the rainwater tank is topped up with water supply from the mains water supply or the plumbing system is connected to the mains water supply.
Rainwater collection system comprises of a catchment surface such as the rooftop, gutter and piping system, rainwater storage tanks, rainwater tank accessories and water pump. Good functional health of every component of the rainwater collection system is necessary. It is important to check all components at a regular interval of six months. The rooftop which is used to collect the rainwater should be made of good material that does not pass any harmful chemicals to the water. If the roof is painted, one must ensure that the paints that are used are safe for rainwater collection. The first rainfall would wash all the dirt, dust and contaminants such as dead insects etc, debris from the roof and carry it to the rainwater storage tanks, thus first flush diverter devices are used so that the first few liters of rainwater is not collected once the rooftop is clear of all contaminants, rainwater is ready for storage. Filters, mosquito mesh etc can be installed so that all solid contaminants can be removed from the water before it enters the rainwater tank.
Rainwater collected through the rainwater collection systems can be used for all purposes, but generally in urban areas where the pollution level is little high it not advisable to use the rainwater for drinking purposes. As far as non drinking purposes are concerned, the rainwater can be used for watering gardens and lawns. Rainwater can also be used for car cleaning and washing clothes and flushing toilets, that means dependency on mains water supply can reduce by 70%, which means a lot of savings on monthly water bills.
