Rain Water System

Rain water Systems are being used widely throughout Australia. Many people have installed rainwater tanks at home and offices. Rainwater systems have also been installed in commercial and industrial complexes. Rain water systems play a very important role in the field of agriculture and irrigation. Rainwater is an ideal substitute for mains water supply. Even if one uses rainwater for non drinking purposes such as car washing, flushing toilets, watering gardens and lawns etc, the dependency on mains water supply will reduce by 70%.

Rain water storage system is a simple setup. The idea is to save rain water that would be sufficient for the entire dry spell. During the dry weather, people in Australia have to face acute water shortage. With rainwater systems, no household job ever comes to a halt, not even watering plants. The Rainwater storage tanks incorporated in the rainwater system is connected to the household plumbing. A water pump can be used to push water through the plumbing pipelines whenever anyone opens a tap. When the water in the rainwater tank falls below the minimum level the plumbing system can be switched to the mains supply or the rainwater tanks can be topped by mains water. Rainwater system not only helps in conserving water but also saves money.

Rainwater system has also brought great relief to the agricultural industry. The main issue of water supply for crops in dry weather has been greatly resolved. Concept of rain gardens has also been introduced to improve the ground water levels and the fertility of soil. Rainwater that would other wise go as waste in run off is directed towards a basin of soil full of native plants. These plants help water to get absorbed by the land. The sediments and contaminants that the water gets along with it get mixed in the soil and this also improves the fertility of the soil.

Many household have installed rainwater tanks to store water for drinking purposes. Generally in urban area where the pollution in atmosphere is high due to heavy traffic and industrial establishments, the government suggests not to use rainwater for drinking purposes as it may have toxic contaminants that are not easy to filter. Concrete, steel and poly/plastic rainwater tanks are generally used for storing rainwater for drinking purposes. If you plan to install a plastic rainwater tank to store water for drinking purposes, you must ensure that it is UV stabilized and food grade plastic is used as the manufacturing material. The tank should have smooth walls and opaque exteriors.
