Rain Collection Systems

Rain Storage

Australia is known as the driest continent on the planet. Throughout Australia, people have to face a lot of water related problems due to severe water restrictions. In order to overcome water related problems the government is widely promoting the concept of rain storage. Thankfully, throughout Australia the rainfall pattern is good enough to sort out problems related to shortage of water supply. The logic behind rain storage is very simple. The idea is to capture the rainwater during rainfall. For this a catchment area is required. Generally, the rooftop is used as the rain catchment surface. The water is then transported to the rainwater tank through the gutters and piping system. The water remains stored in the rainwater tanks till the time there is any further requirement.

Well, the actual implementation of rainwater storage system is not as simple as the logic explained above. The rain storage is required to eliminate the dependency on mains water supply. Therefore the quality of rainwater supplied to the household plumbing should be good enough to be used as a substitute for mains water supply. This means that the components of the rainwater storage system should be maintained in good health only then one can think of regular supply of good quality rainwater supply.

Rainwater tank can be used for all kind of household jobs. It is not a wise thing to use potable water from mains supply for flushing toilets or washing clothes because of two reasons. Firstly using mains water supply for toilets and washing clothes is a costly affair as this practice constitutes 75% of the monthly water bill amount. Secondly, by substituting mains water supply by stored rainwater at least for non-drinking purposes one can significantly contribute towards conservation of water.

None drinking purposes for which rainwater is stored includes toilet flushing, washing clothes in washing machine, watering gardens and lawns, car cleaning etc. Stored rainwater can also be used for drinking purposes but for that the quality of stored rainwater should be of high quality and the water should be properly disinfected. Regular maintenance of rainwater storage system is essential. Make it a point to inspect all the components after every six months. It is always better to install rainwater tank accessories in the storage system so that all kind of contaminants are removed from the rainwater before it is allowed to store in the rainwater tank.
