In regions where people have to face severe water restrictions, rainwater collection systems can be installed. These rainwater collection systems can store rainwater in huge volumes which is generally sufficient to last the entire dry spell. Australia is known as the driest continent on earth. There is scarcity of water but thankfully the rainfall patterns are good in Australia. Rainwater which does not get absorbed easily by the hard land can be collected and used as substitute for mains supply. Rain gardens can also be used to collect rainwater to recharge ground level of water.
Rainwater collection system follows a simple functional logic. The rainwater is captured with the help of a large catchment area. This area collects the rainwater. With the help of gutter and piping system the catchment area is connected to a reservoir which is generally a rainwater storage tank. The water is transported to the rainwater tank. A filter is fitted at the inlet of the tank to prevent solid contaminants from entering the tank. The catchment surface is generally an open surface like a rooftop and therefore is covered with lot of dirt, dust; dead insects and leaves and when the rain falls on the surface the first few litres of rainfall will carry all the contaminants with it, therefore first flush diverters should be installed so that the first few litres of rainwater are not stored in the storage tank. Water pumps can be installed to supply rainwater to the end user at a good flow rate.
